I love ripping up flooring and seeing what you find. Thats what I was doing in our last Sunday in fact.

So far the most amazing discovery was that originally our house didn't have a foundation basement. They just threw some cedar logs on the ground and built the house on top of them. Later the house got raised up and the logs became beams, keeping the house from slumping into the basement. Twenty or so years later, they had to bolster the original logs with a cross running I beam. When we get around to finally tearing out the originally beautiful but now heavily damaged wooden flooring on the main floor, I'll probably have to build a new subfloor over those logs. Fun! Fun!

Great site, by the way, I just discovered it today and am enjoying reading back through your posts.
