We went shopping last week for some furniture for the back deck and garden, in anticipation of our birthday party. We bought two sizes of teak and metal tables, plus 6 chairs and a teak garden bench -- all on sale at David Smith & Co. Without having that tree in the middle of the yard, plus all the hard work my partner has put into the garden over the past 6 years, things were looking great.
We also made our inaugural use of our new fire pit, another sale purchase from last Fall. It looks like this (do a search on firepit moon stars to find it for sale online):
We grilled salmon with a honey glaze over the fire, burning wood from the tree we had removed. It was a bit cool last night so sitting around the fire was a key part of the evening, especially later on. I made a red cabbage slaw with a cumin-garlic dressing, cucumbers in sour cream, french bread and cheese, blueberries and strawberries with sugar, and for dessert I made a flourless chocolate cake which came out great. We had loads of beer, wine and mixed drinks as well.
Later on in the evening we did a Kava Ceremony, with some kava we brought back with us from our trip to Fiji at the beginning of the year.
Everyone was really relaxed and it was a good time all around. It was our first backyard party since we've lived here. I can't wait until we sort out getting a flagstone patio installed and a new deck, but work is crazy busy and those projects will just have to wait -- we don't even have time to deal with hired help to work on them.
