We got quotes from three cabinet dealers, one who was a builder, one that included an install quote. We haven'td decided which line to go with yet though we are in basic agreement that we like something with a little more decoration than a shaker style and that we do like painted wood (even if it gets small cracks in the finish at the joints).
We are committed to pushing the kitchen wall out now that we've had a little more input about that. It will be nice to have the space organized a little better and have an area to eat plus a new stove, sink and dishwasher.
The weirdest thing about talking to a couple of these kitchen people are that they have these ideas about what has good market value, should you decide to sell your home. I've heard "cherry cabinets with granite countertops" are really popular (can I say yuck) and also that stone flooring is more desirable than linoleum. Sheesh. I figure that there's something to be said for design and style-- I'm after a vision here of a modern kitchen but that has a period feel to it. Plus I don't want to be standing on a hard, cold stone or tile floor. Yeah we can install radiant heating in the flooring but still, seeing my little baby bang his head on the tile floor would be awful.
I think we are just going to talk to a few builders now, based on recommendations from some friends and acquaintances and then see where to proceed from there. We still have lots of final planning and decisions to make in the meantime.
