I mentioned in a previous post that I was thinking about whipping out some hats and things for preemies. I've started on one last night, something quick and not too big. I thought I would share some of the links I've found with information and instructions about knitting for preemies.
Ray of Hope - a UK site with lots of information about sizing, patterns, and links for more info
The Preemie Project - I think I came across this link originally on someone else's blog but it's an informative site with details about sizing and yarn brands that will work.
Care Wear - site with a nice search feature to find contact information for hospitals in your state who you can contact and what their needs are. You can find the knitting patterns here
Newborns in Need -- link to a page with instructions for a variety of hat sizes
Baby Cable Cap -- a pattern designed byJudy, owner of the String and Air site.
Project Linus --with chapters all over (or you can start one) Project Linus provides blankets to children in need from newborn to age 8.
These items can also be used for bereavement. I wonder how it would feel if you lost your baby, but then having something handknit with care to wrap them in for the last farewell might add a little consolation. I hope so.
It sounds like the smallest hats are required less often, but knowing that a hat that normally fits a newborn was a big massive on my friend Jen's little guy, definately scaling down by an inch or so would be helpful -- stretchy is probably even better.
